My Why

I Exist to Help Souls Heal

Every experience enables me to help others.

For twenty-five years I helped people heal their bodies.

Now I help them heal their souls.

Your answers are within. I’ll help you find them.

I help people find their gifts so they can find their own answers.

I bring people to their Aha Moment.

My Story

My gifts began in childhood, shortly after a farm accident took the life of my fifteen-year-old brother. Stan had been a powerful influence in my life. After death, his influence continued. At sixteen, as I sped along a narrow country lane, I heard Stan say, “You need to slow down.” His voice gripped me. I felt it. I hit the brakes. Around the corner I met a pair of headlights. There was plenty of damage, but no injuries. Had I not heeded his warning, I might have been killed.

While still a teenager, through my rowdy football and rodeo years, I continued to have experiences, I wondered about the messages and why others didn’t experience them. Still naïve, and using the vocabulary available to me at the time, I asked a trusted friend, “Does God ever speak to you in sentences?” Without asking for clarification, she offered a sincere look and said, “Don’t ever doubt that.” Over the years, I’ve learned to trust and go forward.

As an emergency physician, I received messages that helped me care for patients. Occasionally they led me to a diagnosis I hadn’t considered. Some people, however, were simply too ill or too injured to survive. And, when a patient died, sometimes I saw their spirit—their eternal essence—leave their body. They always thanked me for my efforts. They were always grateful. Knowing how they felt about their transition helped me when friends and family members left this realm. I know they are happy.

After a quarter century of silence, I finally came to feel I should share. Many of my experiences are in my award-winning book, Not Yet. Others, I share in person. In the ER, I cared for more than 60,000 patients. As I boarded a plane to my first formal speaking engagement, a kind voice I’d come to trust, wrapped around my heart and whispered, “You will help more people with this book than you helped as a physician in the emergency department.” I was so grateful I wept.

In my darkest hours—sometimes very dark—my guides continued to teach me. When the veil was drawn back, I experienced eternity, and felt whole. Their message was simple and compelling: “Every experience is to enable you to help others.” As I visit with people, I discern their gifts. I help them find their spiritual center. Whether speaking to large groups or small workshops, or during one-on-one mentoring, I don’t give people my answers; I help them find their own. That’s why I’m here. That’s why I share.

My Path

Despite my decades as a physician, and my recent path as a spiritual mentor, I'd never referred to myself as a healer. I could help souls heal but, in my mind, there was only one Healer. A friend told me I was a healer and should call myself such. I resisted and explained why. He pushed back, saying, “I think you’re a healer and I don’t think the Master Healer would mind you using the word. I think you should ask.”

I disappeared into the solitude of a long run and pondered what my friend had said. Then I asked, “Is it alright to call myself a healer?” The answer came with what felt like a chuckle. “Of course,” the voice said. “I made you a healer.”

My Recharge

I grew up in the gorgeous mountains of rural Utah. I recharge on my bike in those mountains. When I return to the front yard of my childhood home, where my parents still live, I relax in the shade of the tree we planted the summer Stan died. I call it my Stan Tree. I soak up energy and inspiration, like ideas for my art and children’s books.

Sheila and I have been married more than 33 years. We love spending time with each other and with our five kids and five grandkids. And, though we know he’s happy, we still miss our beloved dog, Buddy.

I love recreation and travel, but my greatest recharge comes when I speak to large groups or mentor individuals face-to-face. Helping souls heal, heals me.
