Feel and Know

My friend, Nick.

Though a generation younger, Nick felt connected to Mark by their shared love of music.

Mark had struggled before meeting Nick but was now in a good place, off drugs, enjoying his music, and loving life. Nick saw his friend’s heart and his potential.

Mark’s addiction resurfaced suddenly and took his life.

After the funeral, Nick sat alone at home on the edge of his bed. He felt the mattress next to him compress, tipping him slightly as if someone had just sat down to his left. He looked but didn’t see anyone. Still, he knew exactly who it was. He felt Mark.

Mark’s presence brought a flood of understanding. Without words, Nick knew his friend was ok, free from addiction, and in a good place.

Words are slow and inadequate. What Nick felt and knew overwhelmed anything Mark could have said.

When your messengers come, trust what you feel and what you know. That is the message.
