“She Loved My Son”

“My name is Lindsay Fekitoa,” the Instagram message began. “I just learned of Rachel’s passing, and I’m so saddened.”

I knew my daughter was a skilled and compassionate nurse, but I hadn’t met anyone who’d been impacted by her care. Lindsay sent pictures and gave me permission to share.

“I had the great privilege to be one of Rachel’s NICU moms,” Lindsay continued. “She loved my son. Many times, I needed reassurances, and she was there. She was Malakai’s primary nurse for four months. She was everything to me while we were there.”

Apparently, Rachel’s service continued beyond the walls of the hospital and the hours on her timecard.

“She took time to come to my son’s baby blessing,” Lindsay said, “and gave him a small dinosaur and a book I still treasure eight years later. I will carry on your daughter’s memory through him. When he got older and saw pictures of the tubes in his body, he was sad, but when I told him he had the best nurse, he felt comforted almost as if he remembered her.”

We’ll never comprehend the scope of Rachel’s impact. But, in this one case, Lindsay shared a recent picture of Malakai, and said, “Here he is today. A huge difference because of your daughter.”

The good we do reaches further than we know. Do something good for someone else.
