My Mother’s Love
Mom and her firstborn on her 21st birthday.
My mother graduated to a new realm.
She reunited with her parents, husband, son, two siblings, two grandchildren, and many friends. In the weeks before her death, I saw the anticipation of those glorious reunions in her eyes. I saw hope and love.
Before leaving, Mom asked that I not be sad at her passing.
“I won’t be sad,” I promised, seeing her selfless concern for me. “I know where you’re going. I’ll miss you, but I won’t be sad.”
An experience several years earlier had prepared me. One beautiful morning, for no apparent reason, an infinite, unconditional, unimaginable love—a love indescribably expansive and, at the same time, intimately personal—suddenly enveloped me. Truly ineffable, it instantaneously healed my wounds and filled my insecurities with wholeness. It was everything!
I sank to my knees and wept. I wanted it to stay forever.
“Who are you?” I whispered.
“I am your Mother,” She answered.
That love emanated from Heaven, but my earthly mother had enabled me to recognize and receive it. She’d immersed me in unearned, undeserved, unwavering love my entire life. The eternal truth that sustained me through my darkest broken days, the one thing I absolutely knew, was my mother loved me.
No matter my mistakes, my mother loved me. It eclipsed every sermon from every pulpit. She personified what religion failed to comprehend or teach. Her love was not transactional. It just was.
I don’t know all things. I don’t know whether my experience years ago came from my Creator or from the spirit of my then still-living mortal mother who stepped through the veil in some incomprehensible way to commune with my soul. I think it was both.
What I do know, is an Infinite Divine Omnipotent Feminine Soul loves me.
She is love, as am I.
I know it. And I still feel it.
